New items available.....ear cuffs!

I'm very excited about a new item that I've added to my website - ear cuffs! I've added two broken china ear cuffs and one sea glass ear cuff.

Ear cuffs give a unique fashion statement. And they're great for those who don't want to pierce their ears. These have a wide curve to them for a comfortable feel. They're made from 20-gauge artist wire and can be adjusted for a perfect fit.

Here's one of the broken china ear cuffs. It's designed from antique Nippon china with gold artist wire. The ear cuff measures 1-3/4" long. This cuff can be worn in either ear.

The second broken china ear cuff is designed from Limoge china and measures 2". This one is made with silver artist wire and has two blue beads. This ear cuff is designed for the right ear but if you'd prefer to wear it on the left ear, just let me know and I can change it. You can see from the photo that the china piece hangs loose from the cuff when worn.

And there's also the sea glass ear cuff. This sea glass is a very light blue and is from Maui, Hawaii. The ear cuff measures 1" and hugs the ear when worn. It can be worn in either ear.

These ear cuffs are being offered for only $12.99 each. The broken china cuffs can be found by clicking this link. And the sea glass cuff is at this link.

Paul Newman dead at 83

What a sad headline to read on AOL this morning. One of our most respected actors has lost his battle with cancer. As much as I knew that he hadn't been doing well for awhile now, it still came as a shock. It's funny how some people you've never even met can still be such a part of your life. I've been an admirer of Paul Newman for so many years, not just as an actor but as a person too. He's one of the few actors who never let his fame get the better of him. He never even liked to sign autographs because he felt the act made it seem that his signature meant more than other peoples and he was never arrogant about who he was. Today's actors could learn some very valuable lessons from his example in so many ways. He was a brilliant actor and a very charitable, caring man with a wonderful sense of humor and he will be missed. I think I'll be pulling out my old video and watching him as Butch Cassidy sometime this weekend just to see him smile again.

My first feature in an Etsy Treasury!

I've just been added to my first Etsy Treasury! And what a fun Treasury it is! If you buy any item in any of the shops featured in this Treasury, your shop will replace that one! And if your shop is still in the Treasury when it ends, you'll be carried over into the next one. Things are selling like hot cakes over there! A really great idea. I just bought some beautiful goldstone beads that will look great with my fall color china plate jewelry and in exchange my blue and white broken china ring is now being featured! A completely win-win situation!

Etsy Treasury

For those of you not familiar with Etsy, it's a wonderful place to shop for handcrafted items. Treasuries are posted as a way for Etsy sellers to promote their products. It's not too easy to get into one so it's quite exciting when you're featured. If you haven't been to the Etsy website yet, you owe it to yourself to check it out. It's a wonderful way to find unique handcrafted items you won't see anywhere else! Here's my shop on Etsy. From there you can go on to check out all the other fabulous shops. And click on my "Add Sellers to Favorites" while you're there! :-)

The Jersey Shore

As readers of this blog know, I've lived on the Jersey Shore my entire life. This is one of my favorite seasons for visiting the beach. During the summer months, we have large crowds of visitors and our beaches are quite a sight with all the colorful umbrellas and beach towels. But this time of year, the beach is mostly deserted except for the sea gulls, the sand pipers and a few fishermen. I've taken a few days off from work and it was a beautiful day so I decided to go down to the beach for a walk. Here are some photos of the Belmar beach and Avon-By-The-Sea beach and the bridge between the two towns.

No sea glass finds this time but I did find some interesting shells, including this fascinating piece.

Maui Hawaii Sea Glass Bracelet

Living on the Jersey Shore all my life, I have collected many pieces of sea glass over the years. Unfortunately, I didn't hang on to a lot of it, especially after my daughter grew up. Of course, now I seriously regret that since sea glass is not as easily found as it once was, due to the fact that we use much more plastic than glass these days. I wonder if sea plastic will ever have the allure that sea glass does. Hard to imagine! But I do have some sea glass left and I've made some jewelry with it to go along with the "cracked" theme of my website. After all, sea glass is actually broken or cracked bottles that have been naturally formed and smoothed by the sea. And I've always loved the beauty of natural sea glass.

Then a few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of receiving some sea glass from a fellow jewelry designer and friend from Maui, Hawaii. I've always dreamed of visiting Hawaii one day and couldn't have been happier to receive genuine Maui sea glass. To learn more about my friend, Jamee Jones, and her beautiful Hawaiian beach wedding jewelry, see the feature that was posted on this blog on 8/13/08. Here's the first jewelry piece made from Jamee's Maui sea glass, made with gold artist wire. The bracelet is 7" long (it can be made longer if you'd like - just let me know) and is available now on my website at marjoriescracked.com.

Broken plate traditions

Being a designer of broken china jewelry, I'm naturally curious about all the traditions surrounding china and the breaking of it. And there are many such traditions. I did a little research and these are some of the traditions that I found.

The first I'll mention and I think the most well known is the tradition of breaking plates at weddings. Jewish people break a glass under the wedding canopy which symbolizes the destruction of the Temple. It is becoming more popular at Jewish weddings now for the bride and the mother-in-law to also break a plate before the wedding. When they break the plate, it represents irreversibility, just as the marriage vows are meant to be irreversible. Some say that both the glass and plate are broken to lend a note of seriousness to the occasion.

They also break plates at Greek weddings. That plate breaking takes place as the bride and groom and their guests celebrate the wedding by dancing. The Peloponnese have a tradition of breaking a plate on the doorstep of the newlyweds to ward off
spirits. Another Greek tradition is breaking a plate at the parting of two lovers so no matter how many years may pass before they meet again, they'll be able to recognize each other by putting the two halves of the plate together.

Many Greek restaurants are known for their plate breaking. Some will even smash plates every once in awhile outside their restaurant doors to attract customers. And some Greek restaurants have a smashing area where their customers can smash their own plates. And then there are the restaurants in Greece where plate breaking is not welcome - they serve their customers their meals on metal plates to prevent it! Breaking plates is a highlight of Greek night and expresses happiness and joy.

In Czechoslovakia, the bride and groom break plates to see how many pieces the plate breaks into. The more pieces, the more successful the marriage will be.

During the bridal waltz at Finnish weddings, the bride's mother-in-law puts a plate on top of her head and when the plate falls and breaks, the pieces are counted and represent the number of children the couple will have.

In Denmark, the tradition is the throw china plates at their friends' houses and the more plates thrown, the more friends you'll have.

Breaking plates can also symbolize being rich - similar to having money to burn. You're so rich, you can smash plates and still have more of them.

I read an interesting note in one of the articles I found. When someone is drunk, we say he is "smashed". Possibly that slang started when someone woke up with a hangover after a party and felt as broken as all the plates lying around him.

If any readers of this blog know of any other traditions involving broken china, please post a comment and let us know. It's quite an interesting subject and I'd love to learn of more traditions!

Catwalk Creative for everything Vintage!

I've met a lot of wonderful people since beginning my adventures in the jewelry world. And one of the nicest and most helpful and knowledgeable people I've met is Louise Sleigh of Manchester, United Kingdom, the owner of Catwalk Creative, an online vintage store.

Louise has a truly wonderful eye for fashion. Read through her blog or browse through her store and you can feel her passion for all the styles, clothing and accessories that make women feel more beautiful. She's a very detailed oriented person, which can be seen from her attention to details on her website at www.catwalkcreative.co.uk. She includes photographs of each item and full and complete measurements. If there are any tiny imperfections at all in the garment, Louise will mention them. There are no surprises when ordering from her. She makes sure that you know exactly what you're buying. And her prices are so affordable!

One of the most interesting blogs out there is Louise's. Keep your eye on her blog and you'll be kept up-to-date on all of today's fashions.

Together with the vintage clothing and accessory line, Louise runs a dress agency with designer labels. She's a member of vintage Fashion Guild (VFG) and the eVintage Society. And you'll know that when dealing with her, you're dealing with an honest and knowledgeable vendor. I highly recommend her!

My Brand New Etsy Shop!!

Yes, I finally did it - I finally found the time to set up a shop on Etsy! Even though I have a website at www.marjoriescracked.com. I've always wanted to be a part of the Etsy team. Most of the other jewelry artists I've met through this blog, Beadingaholics Yahoo Group and Facebook have shops on Etsy. And now I can say I do too.

I plan on finding the time to participate in Etsy's forums and their charity work, especially the work they do on behalf of animals. I know I have a lot to learn about all that goes on there. I only have ten items in the shop at this point. If they do well, I'll be adding more.

I hope you'll stop by and check out my shop. If you're a member of Etsy, make me one of your favorites and I'll return the favor.

And of course, as always, you can still find my jewelry at www.marjoriescracked.com.

My interview on Catwalk Creative Weblog

Louise at Catwalk Creative has given me the huge honor of conducting an interview with me and posting it on her weblog. What a wonderful compliment to be asked to do an interview for such a fascinating weblog! Louise is the owner of Catwalk Creative, an online vintage clothing boutique and dress agency. She has quite an eye for fashion. I'm going to hold off on saying anything more about Louise and her vintage business because I plan on doing an in-depth feature on Catwalk Creative which you'll be able to read here, so keep your eye out for that. In the meantime, here's the interview by Louise - thanks again, Louise! I very much appreciate your taking the time to interview me.

I'm sure if you're from outside of the US, you'll be able to figure out when the show starts for you. The Jewelry Connection is a live on-line radio talk show, augmented with multi-media support. Location of the actual show is:

Every Sunday Mona interviews an independent jewelry designer. The show runs for an hour and they end with a question and answer session. They have a chat room where you can type in your questions. You don't need to register with the website to listen to the show but you do need a user name and password to log in if you'd like to ask a question.

Mona also put together a fabulous video of my jewelry which is now on YouTube. Here's the link for that:

I hope you'll stop by this Sunday and join us "LIVE" for the show. What better thing could happen to an artist than to be asked to talk about their art?! I can't wait to start talking about my broken china jewelry! See you there.
